While developments in the tourism, culture and hospitality industry have led to socio-economic benefits in other parts of Ghana, the Northern Savanna Ecological Zone (NSEZ) accounts for less than 5% of total tourist traffic in the country and also less than 15% of the total country stock of accommodation facilities.

Tourism, a major socio - economic activity and force for showcasing culture and creative arts has the potential of becoming an engine of socio-cultural, economic and environmental development and growth through foreign exchange and tax revenue if well structured, organised and packaged. It is believed that this can also drive substantial improvement in the well-being of indigenes in the form of job creation, income distribution and balanced regional development.

The opening ceremony of the 2017 World Tourism Day Celebration and Northern Ghana Tourism Investment Summit has opened in Tamale. Dignitaries like the Northern Regional Minister Hon. Salifu Saeed, the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Pavelyn Tendai Musaaka, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Kwasi Agyeman, The Counselor of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Columbia in Mexico, Alfonso Orduz, The CDH Group, Professor Kweku Boakye of the University of Cape Coast and Mr. Augustin Otu, of GIPC attended the opening ceremony which took place at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections promised in its manifesto among many other things, the establishment of One District, One Factory if elected to form the next government. True to their word, the NPP-Led Government upon assuming office, established the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives (SDI) to roll out the One District One Factory in fulfilment of its agenda to spur district level industrialization, create jobs and wealth at the local level.

A two(2) day stakeholder forum organized by the Northern Sector Agriculture Investment Coordination Unit (NSAICU) and co-facilitated by the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) was held across 2 district ( Jirapa and Wa) in the Upper West Region on the 31st of May and the 1st of June 2017 respectively.. The forum was organized to sensitize participants on the invasion of the Fall Army Worm (FAW) and how to control it.

SADA in collaboration with Surbana Jurong, a premier Spatial and City Modeling agency of the Singapore Government, made a presentation on the Transport and Infrastructure plans of Buipe and Tamale for some key Ministries and MDAs on June 1, 2017 at the SADA Accra Conference Hall. This was streamed live on our Social Media. The purpose was to enable key ministries make an input into these plans before they are finalized. This is part of the final engagement processes of the design of the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone Long-Term Plan.

The Minister for Social Development Initiatives and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson conducted a three-day familiarization visit to the Northern Savannah Ecological Zone. The Minister was accompanied by her staff and the Project Implementation team of the office of the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.

Nafisah Azundow, 35, is a native of Yagaba community in the Mamprugu Maogduri district located in the Northern Region of Ghana. She is married with 5 children and farm as a peasant to cate for her family’s livelihood. Nafisah used to cultivate maize on 1ha land each year while helping her husband on their family land. This was barely for survival.

An exploratory visit was made to Digya Forest. The purpose of the trip which took place on the 12th of April 2017, was to identify tourist attractions in the area to market. The team was made up of the Manager of GTA-B/A, four chiefs from Sene East Traditional Council, a representative from the District Assembly and SADA Regional Coordinator. These are the names: Stephen Appiagyei, Nana Amponi-Akyeamehene, Nana Asabre II-Adontenhene, Nana Krunkum Sunkwa II, who also happens to be Dist. Community Director, Odikro Kofi Nyame of Daaditoku, Zakari Majisi of the Dist. Assembly and Diana Jehu-Appiah.
